Can Harry Kane ever break his finals jinx, or is he destined to be a nearly man?

Unfortunately, it’s not coming home! England just endured a sad 2-1 defeat in the UEFA Euro 2024 finals against Spain. Instead of seeing Three Lions break their deadlock, it was rather La Roja who lifted their record fourth title. While the loss is truly devastating for the English fans, it has much more significance to Harry Kane. The skipper has apparently lost a series of finals before in his career, but exactly how many?

To be precise, Harry Kane has lost a total of 6 finals. The first two losses came during the finals of the Carabao Cup while he played for Tottenham. Next was one of the biggest of his domestic career, having lost the 2019 UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool, followed by the UEFA Euro 2020 against Italy. While hope was ignited for Kane to finally open his silverware account with a move to Bayern Munich last year, things have turned out to be slow.

In his first season, he and the Bavarians didn’t win a single trophy. Aside from the early Champions League exit as well as losing out the Bundesliga, Kane lost the German Super Cup final. Now, the recent defeat to Spain in the Euro finals was his sixth loss. Seems like the ‘Kane curse’ might be true, with the former Millwall star again failing to win the crucial trophy for his nation.

Notably, Spain drew first blood just after the start of the latter half, courtesy of a goal from Nico Williams. However, substitute Cole Palmer came to the rescue of England minutes after the hour mark. Just when fans had the gut feeling that the match was going to extra time, Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal. While the win remains historic for Spain, what happens for England now?

What’s next for Harry Kane and Co. after England’s loss to Spain?

It is certainly quite an unfortunate loss for England. This was their second consecutive upset, having endured a narrow defeat in the 16th edition of the European competition. Despite being backed as favorites, their 58-year wait continues after having won the 1966 World Cup as their last trophy. Certainly, it’s time for England now to look ahead of their future.

Can Harry Kane ever break his finals jinx, or is he destined to be a nearly man?

Have an interesting take?

With the 2026 World Cup being the next stop, there’s still time for the Three Lions to make the best out of these two years. Additionally, the decision shall be made regarding Gareth Southgate, who has been a target of criticism for quite some time. Whether England wishes to retain him or not is a call they need to make clearly and concisely.

For now, the only advice for the English lads is to get through this tough moment and keep their heads up for the brighter days ahead. As for Spain, congratulations for their record fourth title.
