The past few weeks have been quite tough for the USWNT. Ever since their premature exit from the 2023 FIFA World Cup, the whole world seems to have turned against them. The likes of Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, and Vlatko Andonovski continue to face criticism from their fans. Speaking of which, massive news has broken out surrounding Vlatko.
Reports from the apex news outlets are suggesting that the head coach is set to resign from his post. But what’s more interesting is that the USWNT already has a replacement for him as they eye a Champions League winner.

While the players are being held responsible for the loss, it’s mostly the coach that is being slandered the most. In fact, after they crashed out of the tournament, fans urged the team to fire Vlatko. However, it seems the Macedonian-American coach is doing the job himself. As per the reports, Vlatko has agreed internally to step down as the head coach of the US Women’s National team.
This has led the American Soccer Federation to find a new coach. In fact, they seem to be one step ahead, as they have already contacted former FC Barcelona Femení coach Lluis Cortes. Apparently, the US Soccer board sees Cortes as the perfect man for the job. Recently, he also stepped down from the position of head coach of the Ukrainian national team.

However, his previous achievements with Barca may entice the USWNT into considering his signing. His silverware collection includes the 2020-21 UWCL and two Copa de la Reina titles. Under Cortes, they were also the runners-up of the UWCL in 2018-19. Indeed, the CV looks good, but it remains to be seen if they’ll sign him or not.

Other potential candidates to replace Vlatko
With Vlatko’s 2019 contract also coming to an end, the USWNT has far more obvious reasons to look for a new coach. While Lluis Cortes is one name, there are other names that the US Soccer Board can consider. The current England manager, Sarina Wiegman, is a name that bodes well for the team. Other names include Chelsea manager Emma Hayes and Brazil’s coach Pia Sundhage.
Futoshi Ikeda, who led Japan to the quarterfinals of the tournament, can be a surprise choice. Last but not least, French coach Herve Renard is also mentioned, who infamously beat Lionel Messi’s Argentina with Saudi Arabia. All the aforementioned candidates have good experience. It remains to be seen who they call up.
