Another obstacle for the Portuguese superstar! Cristiano Ronaldo has been denied the luxury of ‘unlimited’ access to connect with his family and friends while in Iran for an important game. This denial comes just hours after Ronaldo returned to Saudi Arabia following his early departure from Portugal’s Euro Qualifiers due to suspension. Portugal in his absence played Luxembourg and won 9-0.

Following the commanding victory, Ronaldo’s focus is now shifting to Al-Nassr‘s upcoming game against Al-Read in the Saudi Pro League. However, the attention is soon to be divided as the team prepares for their journey to Iran for the AFC Champions League clash against Persepolis FC.

Al Nassr vs. Persepolis FC holds significant importance. This encounter marks the first time in eight years that Saudi Arabian and Iranian clubs will be hosting each other in home and away games. Since 2015, both nations’ clubs have been forced to play in neutral venues due to diplomatic tensions. However, this year’s AFC Champions League has ushered in a game-changing moment.

As Ronaldo and the entire Al-Nassr squad gear up to travel to Tehran for the Championship’s opening game, they face a setback in the form of a denial of VIP treatment. The Iranian Minister of Tourism, Ezzatollah Zarghami, recently made a statement that Ronaldo would not be granted unlimited internet access.

“We do not give Ronaldo unlimited internet in Tehran,” Zarghami stated. “He must install national communication programs in Iran, such as ‘Ita’ and ‘Ballah’ so that he can communicate with his family and friends.” This restriction raises eyebrows and sparks speculation about the motives behind the denial.

While the reasoning for this limitation remains unknown, it certainly adds an extra hurdle for the striker. While this is the problem Al Nassr will have to face,  there’s an issue for Persepolis FC too. One that was so significant that their technical director felt ashamed.

Both teams will be participating in the AFC Champions League Group stage on 19 September. However, the condition of Azadi Stadium, the Persepolis FC’s stadium, has become a source of shame. Years of neglect have resulted in its deterioration and safety concerns. There have been allegations of evidence of water dripping from the ceilings and signs of decay.

Yahya Gul Mohammadi, the team’s technical director, openly expressed his embarrassment regarding these conditions. “I am ashamed of the conditions of the Azadi stadium,” he stated. “How will we bring the legend Cristiano Ronaldo to this stadium?” It remains to be seen how Persepolis will navigate these challenges before 19 September.
