The Argentine had a career filled with record-breaking feats, but his MLS journey is taking it to the next level. He has scored 11 goals in just 9 games and has elevated the team’s performance to unprecedented heights. As Messi continues to shine, a former teammate of the World Cup winner is also breaking records in the U.S.

Riqui Puig, former Barcelona teammate of Lionel Messi, who now plays for LA Galaxy, has set an MLS season record with 110 completed passes in a game. He also scored a goal in the victory against Chicago. With 4 goals and 5 assists in his last 9 matches across all competitions since June 21, he has proven himself as a top player in MLS, second only to Messi.

Messi didn’t take long to score his first 10 goals in an Inter Miami shirt. However, they were all scored in the Leagues Cup, with his 11th coming against New York on his MLS debut.

With a goal on his MLS debut and look at his form, Messi’s likely to get to 10 MLS goals faster than anyone else. Additionally, he can potentially break the record for the most MLS goals in a season.

The MLS single-season scoring record is 34, set by Carlos Vela for LAFC in 2019. Carlos Vela needed just 31 regular-season matches to achieve this feat. Messi can challenge this record with a maximum of 12 league matches ahead of him in 2023. Looking forward, there’s also speculation about his performance in the 2024 season, where he could join an elite group of players who have achieved 30 or more goals in a season.
