The 2023 FIFA World Cup saw Spain being crowned the champions, in a 1-0 win against the Lionesses. For La Roja’s 23-year-old starlet, Olga Carmona, it was a moment defined by both joy and adversity. After winning the golden trophy, Spain’s World cup winning goalscorer found out that she had lost her father. Subsequently, the Spanish star’s emotional tribute has caught the attention of USWNT star, Megan Rapinoe.
Notably, the Real Madrid Femenia player previously expressed that her passion for the game was ignited after her father signed her brothers up for soccer, “I went every evening to watch them train,” she said. “I ended up wanting to play so much that I said to myself: ‘Why shouldn’t I go out and train with them?’ added the Spanish left-back.

It was a bittersweet World Cup for Olga Carmona, who dedicated her World Cup win to her father. Tomas Carmona, the player’s father, did not get to see the moment his daughter made history. He passed away while Olga’s mother and brother flew to Australia for the final. During the trophy celebration, the Spanish star gave an emotional speech, remembering her father. She said, “Good evening everyone, Today is a very special day for all of Spain, but it also has a complicated part for me. You know yesterday was full of emotions.”

“For the moment it was the best day of my life, and then it became the worst. I’m really excited to be able to bring this joy to the whole country. Here you have the star you wanted so much. Not only the one we carry in our chests but all the ones in heaven who have accompanied us.” The speech caught the eye of Rapinoe, who shared the clip on her Instagram story. It seems the OL Reign star was touched to hear the heartwarming words from Carmona.

An unexpected World Cup for Megan Rapinoe and the USWNT
The USWNT had a chance to add a fifth golden trophy to their collection, while also clinching a “three-peat.” However, Vlatko Andonovski’s side had lukewarm performances at best and failed to make it past the R16 for the first time, crashing out in a poor display against Sweden.
The whole team became the focal point of criticism, with former President Donald Trump lashing out at Rapinoe specifically after she missed a crucial penalty. Unfortunately, there’s no next time for the soccer icon as she would be retiring from international soccer without adding another golden trophy to her laundry list of accolades.
