Wrexham AFC has seen a complete transformation under its Hollywood owner Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Ever since the takeover in 2020, various surprising decisions have helped the Welsh club succeed. But it was a signing in March that left both fans and players stunned.

This was the recruitment of English goalkeeper Ben Foster, who came out of retirement to play for the Red Dragons. Foster had just announced his retirement from soccer last year but signed with Ryan Reynolds’ side in March to help win the National League. This was a huge shock to not just the fans, but also Wrexham players.

He said, “We walked through there, players’ entrance and we just seen Fosy (Ben Foster) there and we were like, woah, that’s different”. They were pleasantly surprised to see Foster there, but they assumed he was simply visiting or shooting a video. “So we were in the changing room when we were just like whispering to each other like, surely not,” Lloyd revealed.

However, the surprise was in store for them later when they saw that Foster was, in fact, wearing a Wrexham training kit.  Lloyd further stated on the podcast, “We were like Jesus, that is a statement of intent kind of thing like, this title is going to be won. And the buzz around the stadium and training just took another level. Honestly, it was mental!”.

While Foster’s signing may have left the players stunned initially, it has since been embraced by the team. He was brought in to help win the League title and indeed he delivered.

Ben Foster’s journey in Wrexham

Even though Ben Foster’s time with Wrexham was relatively brief, he made an indelible impression on the pitch. Foster played eight matches in the National League during his tenure and made a significant impact across all of them. Among his many notable accomplishments, Foster managed to record three clean sheets during this stretch. Perhaps his most pivotal moment came in a match against Notts County, who were Wrexham’s biggest rival in the title race.

With Wrexham leading 3-2 late in stoppage time, County had a chance to even things up with a penalty shot. However, Foster rose to the occasion and blocked the shot to secure victory for his team. This event also left the owners ecstatic. Thanks to their impressive run and strong play from players like Foster, Wrexham went on to win the National League title and earn themselves a promotion after over a decade outside of the fourth division.
