Moments ago, Inter Miami played their third-last match of the MLS against Cincinnati. Unfortunately, despite the presence of Lionel Messi, the Herons were unable to bolster their playoff aspirations, suffering a disheartening loss by just a single goal. In the aftermath of the match, Tata Martino gave an update on the Argentine soccer legend’s injury.

Inter Miami decided to take a chance by fielding Lionel Messi in today’s game, but unfortunately, there were no positive indications for David Beckham‘s soccer team, as their hopes of reaching the playoffs have completely sunk.

Tata Martino provides an update on Lionel Messi’s injury

After weeks of absence, Lionel Messi finally made his way back to the Inter Miami squad. The Argentinian superstar even managed to get some game time today against Cincinnati. Sadly, his presence wasn’t too impactful for the Herons, as they endured a narrow defeat. Although the Florida-based club took the risk of including him, Martino was thoughtful enough to provide an injury update.

As per Heron Outlet journalist, Ian Hest, Martino said, “I saw that Leo doesn’t have a problem. His injury is healed. But his rythym is off. That’s why he hasn’t played many minutes. The first half we should’ve finished it off and we didn’t.” While acknowledging that it was his team’s fault for not producing a goal in the first half, Martino emphasized that Lionel Messi was injury-free. However, the player still needs to regain his form.

Notably, Lionel Messi entered the game as a substitute in the second half in an attempt to assist Inter Miami in scoring a goal. Unfortunately, the captain couldn’t make a significant impact, and a 78th-minute goal from Alvaro Barreal allowed the visiting team to secure three crucial points at DRV PNK Stadium.

Nonetheless, it’s reassuring to know that Messi is injury-free. However, Martino and his team must be feeling the sting of disappointment after their defeat to Cincinnati crushed their playoff aspirations.

No playoffs for Lionel Messi and Inter Miami!

After this defeat, it’s clear that Inter Miami’s hopes of making it to the playoffs have been shattered. Even with Lionel Messi entering the game as a substitute in the second half, the team’s captain couldn’t change their fortune. The loss has left them in 14th place with 33 points,  seven points behind DC United, who sit ninth.

With just two matches left to play, Tata Martino and his team have no chance of clinching a playoff berth. However, these final two games, both against Charlotte, provide them with an opportunity to improve their domestic standing before the MLS season comes to a close. It’s certainly a disappointing end to the journey of Inter Miami and Lionel Messi in the MLS.
