Lionel Messi, a name synonymous with greatness on the pitch, rarely finds himself embroiled in controversy. Yet, Inter Miami’s pre-season tour saw the Argentine star and the club engulfed in a whirlwind of criticism. Fans in Hong Kong, who were denied the chance to witness Messi in action due to injury, expressed their discontent with boos and refund demands. But amidst the uproar, a familiar voice rose in defense of the maestro- Thierry Henry.
Henry, the former Barcelona icon and French legend, came forth with a passionate declaration calling Lionel Messi a ‘freak.’ The Frenchman reiterated Messi’s status as the world’s best player. “I mean, you have the best player in the world. You have Messi in your league. I think that it’s the first time what I mean by the world’s best is that actually he’s the one that has the title, the Ballon d’Or, or the official one, FIFA The Best. So, you have this guy in your league and I mean, he’s a freak. I played with him in Barcelona, and you know he is something special,” Henry expressed.

So, Henry’s statement reignited the debate once again: Is MLS ready for the unique demands and expectations that come with Lionel Messi? The answer to this challenging question remains multifaceted. On one side, Messi’s presence undoubtedly elevates MLS’s profile internationally. The Argentine’s association with the league attracts a significant chunk of fans and supporters.
However, the challenges remain. The Hong Kong incident exposes the potential for fan disappointment if expectations are not managed efficiently. Injuries are a part of the game, and Lionel Messi’s superstar stature only amplifies the surrounding scrutiny.
Lionel Messi’s response amid unrest among fans
Some 38,000 fans at the Hong Kong Stadium booed and demanded refunds when Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham addressed the crowd at the end of Hong Kong’s friendly. However, Lionel Messi broke his silence on the same day as the Japan friendly. Speaking ahead of Inter Miami’s last fixture of the Asian tour, Messi stated that he ‘regretted’ not playing in Hong Kong because of a ‘painful groin’ injury. “I hope that one day we will have the opportunity to come back and give our best to our fans and friends in Hong Kong,” Messi stated.
