Change in soccer is inevitable. And the need to constantly upgrade has become vital for most of the players. USMNT’s goalkeeper Matt Turner has found himself in a similar position in the English Premier League, with his club Nottingham Forest placed 16th on the table. But his performances conceding 28 goals in 17 starts this season, along with the blunder against Arsenal, could put his NT spot in jeopardy. Despite all the chaos, an ex-USMNT star still feels that a hard-working Matt Turner will “ultimately benefit”.
The US goalie has come through with a few incredible performances, but he has committed some severe howlers this season. In the match against Arsenal, Turner allowed a simple shot from Gabriel Jesus to sneak under his legs, eventually losing the game 1-2. This led to coach Nuno taking the hit on the chin, by saying, “We are responsible.” But, on a positive note, Jesse Marsch feels that this challenge is in the best interest of his personal growth and the USMNT. Marsch, speaking on CBS Sports, stated, “I don’t think Matt Turner’s in a crisis situation. I think it’s good for him to be at a difficult place in the Premier League…The key for him is to just try to create more stable performances.”

Marsch further continued, saying, “If he can stabilize himself, mature, and continue to develop, this can also be a place where he can grow and continue to get better, and that can ultimately benefit the US national team.” Turner can be a shining light for Forest and can help distance them from the relegation zone. Forest is just two points above 18th-placed Everton, who took a 10-point penalty. And a single result can slip down to the bottom 3. Additionally, this could affect the national team, which counts on Turner as its preferred goalie.

Performing in the EPL is essential for Matt Turner and the USMNT!
These club spells play a vital part in boosting a player’s morale, and Matt Turner’s current stats show him to be the second-worst in the EPL with a 70% save rate. Marsch’s suggestion to stabilize comes ahead of an important year, especially with the upcoming Copa America. The USA is the host and will be expected to prove a point to the world after being considered a subdued soccer nation. After all no place is permanent as few other goalkeepers are knocking at the door of the national team.

For example, Ethan Horvath played a pivotal role in Luton Town getting to the Premier League this year. With 19 clean sheets in the EFL Championships 2022–23, he could be the first competitor. Other players like Patrick Schulte, Drake Callender, and Roman Celentano who were called up for the January camp could also get tight for Turner’s spot.

However, Matt Turner has been super effective until now, playing 37 games for the NT and keeping 23 clean sheets. However, international tournaments like these will get more competitive for the US. The Copa America will have the best South American nations, with the likes of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Will the 29-year-old goalkeeper keep up the reputation of the USMNT?
