In the history of the U.S. Soccer Federation, two world-class coaches have never managed a men’s and women’s team together. They have that in Emma Hayes and Mauricio Pochettino. These two have so much potential that they can turn around the team’s fortunes to build something really extraordinary. While one won the Olympic gold medal in Paris, the other looks to find the perfect recipe for success. And yeah, it’s not easy to manage the men’s team.
For years, the USMNT became stagnant under Gregg Berhalter, losing in major tournaments and not justifying their no 18 FIFA ranking. Teams ranked much lower have provided statement victories against the traditional big guns on the international scene. But it also comes down to adaptability. Shifting cultures can cause a coach to take it slow and he is a new environment. But don’t worry Poch, Emma is there for you.
According to an X post, the USWNT coach remains enthusiastic in helping him adapt to the new surroundings. The U.S. soccer culture differs completely from what you have in Europe. So Hayes mentioned, “Both him and I are very happy to be in the U.S. I don’t think he’s quite traveled around as much as me just yet, but I’m helping him navigate all the different airlines and things like that so he gets up to speed on it.”

Lastly, Emma Hayes on Mauricio Pochettino at the #USMNT:
“Both him and I are very happy to be in the U.S. I don’t think he’s quite traveled around as much as me just yet, but I’m helping him navigate all the different airlines and things like that so he gets up to speed on it.”

Yes, airlines are a tricky aspect for sports teams. The NBA teams travel drastically from one place to another. For Poch, his family stays in Argentina. The shorter distance between Europe and his home would make it easier for him to travel. Hayes wants to help him settle like another colleague and you have to tip your hat to her. She wants to put U.S. soccer on the map.

Have an interesting take?
If you compare the men’s and the women’s teams, the USWNT is the pinnacle of success for every soccer team in the women’s game. Legends like Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach laid the foundation for the team to have those glory years over the past two decades. Since then, everyone wanted to play for the USWNT. While characters and huge personalities built that team, Emma Hayes’ team focuses on the tactical intricacies and player profile in the current squad.
As for Pochettino, he could take a point or two from Hayes’ playbook. The coach has the job of building a team from scratch with talented young players at their disposal. We have heard the household names like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie. However, players like Ricardo Pepi, Folarin Balogun, and Gianluca Busio possess the talent to raise the team’s game.
