Transfer introductions set the tone for players to come in and perform to their fullest. A jam-packed stadium welcomed Cristiano Ronaldo to Al-Nassr. Similarly, Lionel Messi received a voracious welcome from the PSG ultras and became their crucial player in no time, with Mbappe and Neymar. But, Scottish club Hibernian went further ahead by taking a reference from the famous American movie, ‘Superbad’ to welcome their new soccer player Matthew Hoppe.

The American soccer player plays for the USMNT and is one of the most reliable players on the squad. But the Scottish club’s comic relief introducing their new player on Twitter received heavy praise. Significantly, they edited a cult scene from ‘Superbad’ to give the fans what they wanted.
American soccer player welcomed by ‘McLovin’
We often regard Superbad as a cult movie as Michael Cera and Jonah Hill play vital roles. The scene referenced is where a character named McLovin prepares to buy alcohol from a store. As he is young, he creates an ID and names it ‘McLovin’ to get permission to purchase alcohol. The young storekeeper (Mindy) has not doubted him and starts billing the bottles. He welcomes her politely. But soon after, when Mindy picks up a crate of beer, he adds how “they recently decided to add more hops to it”.

Hops are flowers or cones of a plant named Humulus Lupulus. It helps the beer to remain fresh and makes its foam last longer. It’s truly an essential component of the beer industry. Back to the key takeaway, the Hibernian soccer club edits its logo on the crate of beer. And when Fogell explains how they added hops, the video cuts toward Matthew Hoppe, their new signing. It’s a creative masterstroke from the PR department.
As the transfer presentation off the ground is eye-opening, the club received a player with bags of potential.
How good is Matthew Hoppe?
For starters, the US teenager started his career with LA Galaxy. Failing to find his feet, German club Schalke signed him to their famous academy. He made 22 appearances for Schalke in the 2020-21 season and scored six goals. Once, he scored a sensational hat-trick against Hoffenheim to announce his arrival. The club, though, endured a spell of turmoil and got relegated to the second division in Germany.

He then moved to Mallorca in Spain and later signed a four-year contract with Middlesbrough in the current season. Hibernian fetched him on loan to give him more game time from his parent club. They currently lie 6th in the Scottish Premier League. He has made eight appearances for USMNT and managed one goal.
