However, it was at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico that Maradona truly cemented his legacy. With a spectacular performance, he led Argentina to victory and fulfilled an entire nation’s dream by lifting the prestigious World Cup. He scored the famous “Hand of God” goal in the quarter-finals against England, as well as the “Goal of the Century” in the same match.
He went on to score another two goals in the semi-finals, bringing his total to five goals, and was named the tournament’s best player. Diego Maradona marked a special place in the history of Argentina, even though he never won a Ballon d’Or. However, there was one promise that he couldn’t keep, and that was a promise from a father to a daughter.
Diego Maradona couldn’t fulfill a promise to his daughters
The soccer great revealed this story to journalist Luis Omar Tapia on one of his trips to Mexico. Tapia said, “He told me that his sole dream in life was to take his daughters to Disney (World) in Orlando, because he had promised them that when they were little he would take them”.
Then he mentioned why Maradona couldn’t fulfill this promise. “He didn’t have time to do so during the ‘94 World Cup. (Then) the U.S. border was closed on him because of his drug problems (at the 1994 World Cup in the U.S.) and his involvement with the Neapolitan mafia.
