Gregg Berhalter: Hero or scapegoat? What's your take on his tenure with USMNT?

The US Soccer Federation sacking Gregg Berhalter was a bolt from the blue, yet not entirely unexpected. After a service of 6 years spread across two tenures, the American soccer icon was relieved from his duties over the nation’s poor display in the Copa America 2024. However, despite the Star and Stripes having moved on, the manager remains under the negative limelight. This doesn’t settle with ex-USMNT star Tony Meola, who urges Berhalter to be respected for making the team ‘better.’

The downfall of the team was entirely shifted to the shoulders of the 50-year-old. While the anger of fans may be justified, Meola believes that people shouldn’t forget what Berhalter’s place in America’s soccer history has been. Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, the former goalie said, “We shouldn’t make Gregg Berhalter a villain. This guy, who played for our national team, played in the World Cup, and I’m sure, spent endless hours trying to make this national team better. It didn’t work out, but for me, he’s still a hero in US Soccer.”

Meola claimed that it was unfortunate that things didn’t work out for Berhalter with Team USA. However, he condemns the disrespect towards the former boss. The pundit further urged the nation to fully close the chapter and start looking ahead. Expressing his confidence in the USA’s golden generation, Meola concluded, “I do think we had the players to do it, but we gotta find the right guy.”

It is indeed quite a surprise backing from Meola for Berhalter. And of course, it should. No matter how things transpired for the MNT under his management, unjust criticism won’t help anyone. The best pill for USMNT and its fans is to start planning. Speaking of which, who is the next man in charge?

The hunt continues for USMNT over the replacement of Gregg Berhalter

A lot of names are on the table to replace the former USMNT striker-turned-coach. The biggest of them all was Jurgen Klopp. The German tactician was touted as a ‘dream‘ addition in the States. However, it didn’t take long for the former Liverpool boss to reject their plea, stating his managerial sabbatical isn’t over yet. Though his rejection crushes the ambitions of MNT, there are other names in line. One key name after Klopp is LAFC boss Steve Cherundolo, whose achievements in the MLS make him a contender.

Yet, if the fans demand someone with a bigger name and experience, then Herve Renard is the man for them. The French tactician earlier led Suadi Arabia in the World Cup and even managed the French WNT. If not him, then another MLS boss, Wilfried Nancy, who led Columbus Crew to a title, can be considered. Additionally, Philadelphia manager Jim Curtin’s name is also on the list. Regardless, there are many names to choose from, but the final decision rests in the hands of USMNT.
