2024 has a lot in store for Lionel Messi on the international front. Aside from Copa America, La Pulga is reportedly poised to play in the 2024 Paris Olympics after Argentina U23 defeated Brazil U23 in the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament. While Javier Mascherano is eagerly awaiting Messi’s nod to play in the summer games, the Inter Miami star has been warned that his return to Paris ‘won’t be a red carpet.

It seems Jerome Rothen won’t easily forget the icon’s 2-year stint at PSG. The French icon candidly reminded the people of his country about the Barcelona icon’s behavior towards the Parisians. Speaking on Rothen s’enflamme RMC Sport, he said, “Some people already have a short memory. He’s been taking shots at PSG, France, and Paris since he left.” Rothen took a dig at Lionel Messi for summarizing his stay in the French capital as a ‘disaster.‘ He also claimed that while France respected the 36-year-old, the efforts weren’t reciprocated. The rant didn’t end there!

“He signed for PSG to shine at the World Cup, and we understood very well that it was a welcoming place to live, financially speaking,” added Rothen. The pundit then expressed a bizarre request to the French people. “As a Parisian and a Frenchman, to see him back here performing with Argentina makes me want to say: ‘Guys, whistle him.'”

He then clarified that he wasn’t asking anyone to be violent, but he was in tandem with the belief that French locals should ‘whistle’ him and express their unhappiness. “Assume that it won’t be a red carpet,” he concluded. These claims are likely to bring discontent to Lionel Messi’s face, who has yet to answer Mascherano regarding his presence in the Olympics.

Argentina U23 coach Javier Mascherano is eager to invite both Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria to the Paris Olympics. However, despite maintaining a great relationship with the duo, several factors might hinder their participation. “As a coach, I have an obligation to invite them but one understands that they have other obligations and it will depend on them. It’s not that simple,” he said.
