Jorge Mas shares thoughts on PSG’s treatment of Lionel Messi

The Inter Miami co-owner and billionaire recently shared his thoughts in an in-depth interview for the Spanish outlet El Pais. He revealed many aspects regarding the signing of Messi. It was the first detailed interview with someone high up in the MLS club after the Argentine’s Inter Miami announcement.

When he announced the Inter Miami decision, Messi had labeled his two seasons with PSG as ‘unhappy.’ Jorge Mas commented on why what PSG fans did to Messi was unfair.

Mas spoke about Messi’s stint and wasn’t impressed with what unfolded in two years. Speaking to El Paishe said, “He is a competitive animal… in Paris, he won, not the Champions League, but he did win. A single man does not win a Champions League. I can only speak for Miami, but I think what happened to him there is very sad. He doesn’t deserve to be whistled at the end of games.”

Why did PSG Ultras turn against Messi?

The ambitions of PSG have been high since the Qatar takeover in 2011. Qatar injected a significant amount of cash to upgrade the squad. Their ultimate aim was to win the UEFA Champions League. And when Messi was available on a free transfer, they pounced on the opportunity to sign him.

Despite combining a lethal trio of Messi, Neymar Jr., and Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich knocked PSG out in the Round of 16 in the last two seasons. Messi attracted criticism after missing the penalty against ‘Los Blancos’. But things heated up between him and the fans when Argentina beat France in the World Cup. His performances with PSG were under scrutiny.

The fans felt the Argentine went missing in crucial games, and his poor performances against Bayern ended the patience of the Ultras. They started booing him. Ultras even protested against him, asking him to leave the club after the Saudi Arabia trip saga. From being loved unconditionally by FC Barcelona fans to being booed by PSG fans, Messi’s world turned upside down. He made it clear that his time with the club was not a pleasant one.
