Cristiano Ronaldo has been ever-present for Portugal. He recently scored what were his 124th and 125th goals for Portugal against Slovakia and then topped that with another brace against Bosnia Herzegovina. However, former Chelsea goalkeeper and the London club’s oldest player has questioned the Al Nassr star’s role in the national team.

Ronaldo netted goals number 126 and 127 in the Seleção das Quinas’ 5-0 win over Bosnia in the 2024 Euro qualifiers yesterday. This takes his tally in the Euro 2024 to 9 goals in 7 matches, as he remains the 2nd highest scorer in the qualifiers, 1 goal behind Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku. But in a recent podcast episode, former Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer played devil’s advocate and questioned how Ronaldo fits into the Portuguese national setup.

Speaking on Optus Sport’s latest podcast episode, ex-Chelsea, and Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer raised some doubts about Cristiano Ronaldo and, considering the Al Nassr forward’s age.

Speaking on the show, Schwarzer said, “The question I want to ask, and it’s very controversial … is he kind of almost holding them back a little bit because of the way he plays and the game has to focus around him? Or does he actually help them.””His goal-scoring record is insane, he has over 200 international caps. Who am I to even ask that question? But I just find it intriguing because he’s still scoring goals and so how do you argue?”

“I was in that position as well, whereby people start to write you off at the latter stages of your career. Right. So he’s doing everything right, he’s contributing, he’s scoring goals, he’s still fit, but it’s still a good question to ask right? Because it opens up a debate.”
Schwarzer’s comments come right after Ronaldo’s sister Katia Aveiro penned a long tribute to her brother stating his achievements despite being 38. But for the Al Nassr forward on the pitch, his remarkable goal-scoring form for Portugal continued.
