Just when we thought things couldn’t get worse for Barcelona, the management has taken a drastic step! The club issued an official statement just minutes ago confirming Xavi‘s departure from the club. This comes off as a massive surprise, as the board had specially requested the Spaniard to stay another season. While the decision marks the end of Xavi’s era at Barcelona, the club is set to appoint ex-Bayern Munich head coach Hansi Flick as the new Blaugrana manager.
The German manager has had a decorated career, managing Bayern Munich and the German national team. While Flick is currently a free agent, the manager is among the highest-paid managers in the world. According to reports, his time with Germany and Bayern saw him accumulate a net worth of $12 million. During his tenure as Die Mannschaf head coach, Flick raked in a staggering $7.80 million per annum, from 2021 to 2023.

Additionally, his time at Bayern Munich saw Hansi Flick rake in $10 million per season. The German would expect a similar contract with FC Barcelona despite their financial shortcomings. The manager is also expecting the team to sign some top names this summer, as he hopes to rebuild the squad to his taste. Only time will tell if the German can achieve the same level of success with FC Barcelona following his move to Camp Nou.
Hansi Flick was always the leading candidate to replace Xavi
According to reports, Barcelona was constantly in touch with Hansi Flick despite convincing Xavi to remain with the club. The Barcelona board members, including Joan Laporta and Sporting Director Deco, felt the German’s attacking style of play suited the team more than Xavi’s possession and passing approach. While the club also held meetings with Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel, the Blaugrana had internally confirmed Flick as the successor to Xavi.

Flick has had a decorated career winning the Bundesliga title twice, the UEFA Champions League trophy once, and the FIFA Club World Cup. The German tactician is known for his pressing play approach with the German amongst the first to employ the Gegenpress tactics. It will be interesting to see if the ex-Bavarian boss can use the same tactics with Barcelona, with the Spanish side known for their articulate passing and possession-based play style.
