Sports club owners from other sports are finally branching out and are taking an active interest in soccer. The most recent case comes from within America itself. The new owner of DC United’s reserve team also owns a couple of baseball teams. DC United set up the reserve team not a long time ago. The team currently plays in the second division of American soccer. However, the reserve team has also now needed a major source of income to acquire the required resources to move to the MLS.

DC United came to the limelight after they signed Wayne Rooney as a player in 2020. The British soccer legend is currently on his second spell at the club but this time as a manager.

Who has recently bought DC United’s reserve team?

Greg Baroni is the new owner of Loudoun United. Baroni is an established figure in the baseball circuit. After owning three smaller baseball teams, Baroni has felt the need to try his hand at another sport. Soccer has been growing at a rapid rate in America. A recent report suggested that soccer beat the NBA and the MLB to the Top 100 sports broadcasts in America in 2022. An investment in an American soccer club currently could be a wondrous long-term investment.

DC United established Loudoun United, its reserve team about four years ago. The amount of stake that DC United still retains in Loudoun United is still unclear. However, it’s confirmed that Baroni has purchased the controlling ownership stake in the American soccer team. After the takeover, Baroni expressed his desire and excitement to own a soccer club.

Baroni said in an official statement, “I have a tremendous passion for the sport of soccer and am committed to working together to enhance the fan experience and continue to strengthen the connection to the Northern Virginia community”.

The CEO of DC United, Jason Levein was extremely kind with his words while welcoming Baroni to the soccer universe. The MLS has always focused on nurturing its own players before looking at commercial revenue. US Soccer wants to first ensure that its players are capable enough of competing at the global level. Loudoun United has also always focused on player development. In the bargain, the club has never managed to even qualify for the playoffs to get into the MLS. However, this ownership will surely ramp up the operations and results of the club in a much quicker manner.
