On 5th August, Wrexham made their much-awaited League 2 debut against MK Dons. Unfortunately, their campaign started off with a rude awakening as the Red Dragons lost the match 5-3. After a positive pre-season tour in the USA, this result was a shocker as the performances by the players were below par.

Luckily, Wrexham players bounced back brilliantly in the first round of the EFL Cup against Wigan Athletic. The heavily rotated squad by coach Phil Parkinson put up an improved performance to qualify for the next round. This, however, has become a problem for Phil Parkinson as it has put him in a selection dilemma.

After a shameful campaign opener, getting back to winning ways in League 2 would be the highest priority for Phil Parkinson. However, the gaffer is stuck with a selection dilemma. In the Carabao Cup clash against Wigan Athletic, Max Cleworth, Luke Young, and Ollie Palmer were given game time to prove themselves. Fortunately, their solid performances inspired the Red Dragons to victory. This however has made Parkinson’s life harder as he had benched starters Ben Foster, Ryan Barnett, and Elliot Lee for their game time.

Speaking about the selection dilemma, Phil opined that the team composition will be a mix of best performers from the last two matches. “Those decisions will be based on making sure we have got the right freshness in the team as well as the players who we feel did well against Wigan,” said the gaffer. “There’s a lot of thinking to do but it is great to have that problem going into the weekend.”

Wrexham fans won’t mind a problem like this as long as the Red Dragons pull off an impressive performance yet again. Luckily for them, Phil Parkinson is confident about it.

“I was pleased with the performance and I am looking forward to building on it at the weekend,” said Parkinson. “I am looking for us to put in an equally committed and disciplined performance at Wimbledon, and we will see where that takes us,” optimistically shared the Red Dragons gaffer.
