In February 2021, Wrexham fans had no idea that their fate would take a U-turn when two actors from Hollywood requested to take over the ownership. Notably, after gaining the trust of the fans, Ryan Reynolds and Robert McElhenney purchased the Welsh soccer club for $2.5 million. But it was still a completely new sport for both the owners, especially for Reynolds. But being friends with the soccer superstar David Beckham was a big help for the Wrexham owner.

Talking about Beckham, he is not just limited to soccer. After his retirement, the English soccer legend has made appearances at several NBA and tennis games too. As Reynolds is a good friend, the free-kick perfectionist has also attended Wrexham matches.

Two years ago, the soccer universe was feeling quite vanilla about Wrexham’s takeover. Fans were confused. That’s because two famous actors who had no idea about soccer suddenly decided to invest in the sport. From the beginning itself, Reynolds has termed his tenure at Wrexham to be a long-long one. As the baby steps, he first needed to know the game in and out.

It couldn’t get any better. Because the comedic actor knew MLS’ Inter Miami’s owner David Beckham very well. In an interview last year, the Hollywood duo were speaking about their viral tenure at Wrexham. During the interview, Rob McElhenney also spoke about Beckham teaching them the sport. He said, “Another benefit of being friends with Ryan is that he’s friends with everybody”.

“And so, the idea of learning the rules of football from one of the greatest footballers in the history of the sport is a pretty good aspect”. After which, Reynolds continued, “Yeah, got to speak with him a lot before this experience and certainly during it as well. And I got a lot of tips from him that have been incredibly helpful. Yeah, it’s been pretty amazing”.

The fanbase will never forget about an embarrassing moment when they were still new to the sport. Unfortunately, this took place live in the presence of David Beckham and thousands of fans!

Ryan Reynolds couldn’t spot an offside during a Wrexham game

Last year, Bromley was defending a delicate 1-0 lead against Wrexham. It was a nail-biter with a nervy last few minutes. All of a sudden, Wrexham’s Jack Hyde banged a header in the fifth minute of stoppage time. But he was deemed offside! While Beckham and the fanbase knew it, the ever-famous A-listers did not. They continued jumping for joy and celebrating the goal.

Seconds later, they realized that everybody was looking at them. Beckham shook his head while looking at his naïve pals. Regarding the same, Reynolds once admitted, “How humiliating. In fairness, nobody understands the offside rule. Please. We were cheering. We looked over at Beckham. He was just shaking his head”.

While the offside rule is quite a tricky one for the regular fans too, Reynolds has undoubtedly become much more soccer-smart as compared to 2022.
