Mauricio Pochettino could be the perfect storm to shake up USMNT’s status quo. It will be a fresh experience for most. But not everyone in the team is alien to training under the Argentine coach. Such as their 20-year-old goalie Gabriel ‘Gaga’ Slonina, although who is yet to be a mainstay in the men’s senior team, is quite familiar with Pochettino’s coaching style. Since Chelsea is his parent club, Slonina has time and again has experienced Poch’s management. And the US goalie has now warned his teammates that the USMNT camp won’t be rosy once the former PSG and Tottenham boss takes over.
Many USMNT stars including former captain Tyler Adams have famously asked for a “ruthless” coach. Seems like they are getting one. “Camps are going to be tough, that’s for sure. He’s a guy that pushes his players to work off the field in training,” said Gaga Slonina, referring to Mauricio Pochettino. Then, Slonina shed light on Pochettino’s rigid coaching philosophy and hard tactics.

“How you train is how you play, I think that’s the mindset he goes into it. He’s a very tactical-minded coach, I think it’s going to be very difficult to adapt to that and everything, but the players will pick it on,” Slonina added. The 20-year-old US goalie had represented the USMNT’s young squad in the Paris Olympics. Having gotten a previous senior team call-up, the Chelsea star has now set his eyes on a World Cup squad spot in the USMNT under coach Pochettino. Anyhow, Slonina’s warning and his dream are all waiting, as Poch has yet to arrive at the US camp.
