After weeks of waiting, the moment has finally arrived. Lionel Messi made his debut for Inter Miami. While it wasn’t his MLS debut, it is still a monumental moment in American soccer history. The Argentine soccer legend came on as a substitute and wore the captain’s armband straightaway. Just seconds before the full-time whistle, he scored the winner on his debut!

From Group J, Inter Miami faced Cruz Azul to kick off the new cup format. And we’ve started in full swing. Currently, at the bottom of the table, the soccer veteran’s arrival has definitely brought a smile to everyone’s face. LeBron James, Kim Kardashian, Serena Williams, and many more stars were in attendance. James and Messi shared a heartfelt and tight hug before the game.

The Argentine World Cup winner started the game on the bench. Inter Miami’s Robert Taylor broke the shackles with a strike off his right foot. Soon after the first half, Tata Martino decided that it was time to sub-on Messi. Winger Uriel Antuna equalized in the 65th minute. Unfortunately, neither team managed to score after the equalizer.

Seconds before the final whistle, Inter Miami won a freekick just outside the box. While Lionel Messi stepped up, many from the fanbase had an inkling that something magical might just happen. And it did! The World Cup winner stunningly scored the winner in stoppage time!

He signed a $55 million deal with the club for two-and-a-half seasons. Along with his ex-Barcelona teammates namely Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, they’re surely on a mission in the US.

Apart from the US Open Cup, the Leagues Cup is Inter Miami’s only likely chance to win silverware this season. Without a doubt, Messi’s playmaking experience along with Busquets and Alba’s defensive prowess will be highly beneficial for the team. He scored the winner on his debut too, it is undoubtedly the start of a new era!
