With a 92nd minute goal in the Al Nassr-Al Taawoun match, Cristiano Ronaldo ends 2023 as the world’s top goal scorer with 54 goals. For the Portuguese captain, breaking goal-scoring records has always been a routine affair. This time, however, Ronaldo achieved such a remarkable feat after going through a rough patch at Manchester United in the last season. His last season at Old Trafford was characterized by a drop in form and a fallout with boss Erik Ten Hag. Now that CR7 has risen like a phoenix, he couldn’t help but thank his teammates and fans, and also take pride in his achievement.

As the Saudi Pro League now houses the World’s top goal scorer, it will indeed attract more eyeballs and fan following. While giving his best for Al Nassr, the captain is also proud of the fact that the Pro League is becoming more influential.

After outdoing Al Taawoun 4-1, Al Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo said he was proud of his fabulous stint with the Riyadh-based outfit. Soon, the five-time Ballon D’Or winner broke his silence regarding the goal scoring feat. “I’m really happy. As I told you before, hard work and dedication… I’ve to say thank you to all my teammates. Without them, this won’t be possible. The fans, as they follow everywhere. I want to continue,” said Ronaldo.

Having joined Al Nassr in January this year, the Portuguese chief man is on cloud nine about the Saudi Pro League’s growth. At the heart of the League’s newfound popularity is the exodus of foreign players to Saudi Arabia. And CR7 is arguably the sole reason behind this exodus. During his interview, Ronaldo also called for other elite soccer players from around the world to join the Pro League. With Ronaldo’s goal-scoring record, the Saudi League’s popularity is indeed going to soar. For, an Asian league player has clearly surpassed the likes of European players who compete in soccer’s top leagues.

Top superstars who fell short against Ronaldo

This year, the race to be the top scorer was between Ronaldo, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland. Kane and Mbappe have both scored 52 goals each in this calendar year. As Kane’s Bayern Munich and Mbappe’s PSG’s fixtures for the year came to an end early, they fell short against CR7. Meanwhile, Erling Haaland has been battling an injury since early December. Ruled out of matches since then, Haaland trailed behind Ronaldo, Kane, and Mbappe with 50 goals to his credit.
