One of the upcoming talents in the NWSL is Alyssa Thompson’s sister, Gisele Thompson. The league is home to some of the budding talents in the country, and Gisele looks to make her way into the USWNT squad. Still 18, she entered the United States under-20 Youth National team as they will appear for the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup. But her aim remains locked in for 2028. With Emma Hayes and USWNT winning an Olympic gold medal, she wants to make the team for the next Olympics.
According to a Kamran Nia tweet on X, Gisele mentioned, “Being on the women’s national team is one of the biggest goals of mine. Also, playing with Alyssa and making that 2028 Olympics year would be like a dream of not only me but my whole family.”
When one looks at the USWNT, it’s not the first time two sisters will play on the national team. Earlier, Sam Mewis and her sister Kristie Mewis played together in the team. Sam announced her retirement from the USWNT earlier this year. So, it’s time for the new kids on the block to show their magic.

Like most players, making the next Olympics is high on the list of most budding NWSL players. Yes, it is a big deal for young players, you see. But, if she wants to make the squad, she has her task cut out – portray the best form at the tournament. Without a doubt, the Under 20 World Cup remains the greatest audition for her USWNT career.
Mind you, Emma Hayes will keep her eyes out in the open!

Can Gisele Thompson's Olympic dreams inspire a new era for women's soccer in the U.S.?
Have an interesting take?
It shows the unique direction Emma Hayes looks to go and the current roster remains strong on paper. For a player to get into the squad, either the player should provide maximum output. Or lose your position in the team. Why Alex Morgan was axed remains a mystery. Probably, due to Emma preferring a younger squad, one might say. Well if that’s true, Gisele and Alyssa can pull up their socks and get ready to prove her a point.

On the bright side, both sisters are youthful and just started their professional soccer careers. If you look at the USWNT squad now, they have defenders in their early 30s. Like most managers, sometimes soccer can be cruel to players in their early 30s. The lack of legs to keep running remains one of the most talked about myths in the game. Just ask Luka Modric, from Real Madrid. Or probably, the great Marta. Hence, Gisele can be the next best thing looking to own the right-back position of the team.
Is she good enough to make it to the team, though? Let’s explore some stats!

According to the FB brief, Gisele has averaged 3.97 tackles per 90, 1.62 interceptions, and 1.76 blocks. Those are astronomical numbers. Altogether, she is a talent for the ages. Making her debut for Angel City FC in 2024, she could play a pivotal role in running down the wing and effectively producing the goods from the right-back position.
Hopefully, Giselle and Alyssa could make the team and can make a difference for the USWNT. Emma Hayes would love competition in the squad and yes, it’s arriving in plenty.
