Manchester City is known for its abundance, and it’s getting evident. Most of the players are fighting for their spots but yet choose to stay back with them. One such example is goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, who impressed fans with his immaculate performances this season. The German star has opted to stay back at City as the current goalkeeper Ederson could move out according to rumors. But it isn’t just the club’s massive success for him to remain at Etihad as the goalie opens up about the main reason behind his big move recently.
Speaking in his recent interview, Stefan Ortega revealed that he seeks to take the prime position on the team. He stated, “I want to try to get the number one spot, this is why I signed for Manchester City, and then just do the same as the two years before. Try to win a lot of trophies but enjoy life as well because life is too short sometimes to not enjoy life…” citing the ambition to replace the Brazilian goalkeeper. This comes after Ortega signed a one-year extension to his contract that was supposed to end next season. Manchester City’s #18 arrived in 2022 and will stay till 2026 or even further. However, the latest move comes after Ederson grabbed Asian attention.
“If you work under Pep, he opens your view of football in a completely new way, it’s incredible. He’s a top guy and it’s just a privilege to be a part of his team.” 🩵

Despite quite a few young players choosing to stay back at the Etihad, a few senior players are gaining interest from the money-rich Saudi Pro League. Two of City’s stars, including Kevin De Bruyne and Ederson, are under their target this summer. Although De Bruyne accepted the possibility of joining the Middle East, Ederson hasn’t opened up yet. Reports suggested that 2023 Champions Al Ittihad are interested in the 30-year-old, but their club has made it clear that they will not let him go unless he expresses the desire to leave them. This once again puts Ortega’s aspirations hanging, but the star has already proved his ability.
Is Stefan Ortega good enough to take the number-one spot?
Making your way into Manchester City’s eleven is a tedious task. Nevertheless, the German got the opportunity with Edeson suffering injuries in the second half of the last season. During the time, Stefan Ortega proved to be the perfect replacement for the Sky Blues. Playing 20 games, the stats don’t do justice to the value he provided as the 31-year-old made some fabulous saves to take his team to Premier League glory.
Overall, with all that he has achieved. Ortega has gained the confidence of the fans and teammates. His save against Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min in May was the turning point that helped City hold on to three crucial points and ultimately win the Premier League. And with Ederson’s future still uncertain, both City and Ortega will be glad about the decision.
