The 2023–24 campaign hasn’t even ended, and Manchester City is already moving mountains for the next season. Moments ago, news surfaced that the Sky Blues had signed Brazilian winger Savio from Troyes. While the Cityzens continue to celebrate the new signing, a French legend is ‘angry‘ with Pep Guardiola and Co., urging them to ‘get out’ of France! What happened?
Currently on loan at Girona, Savio will move to Etihad Stadium in the summer. However, Man City’s capture of the 19-year-old isn’t being taken well by Jerome Rothen, who has slammed the English giants for stealing a future star from his former club. Speaking on Sport Witness, he said, “Maybe they think that because it’s Troyes, we’re not going to be vigilant. I find that problematic. I just want to say to them, ‘Get out of here; French football doesn’t need you’. I’m not ashamed to say it; we don’t need them.”
Although Troyes signed Savio from Atlético-MG in 2022, he was immediately sent on loan to PSV Eindhoven in that same window, and Girona came knocking this season. This means the latter has yet to make an appearance for his parent club, but with City’s grab, he won’t be able to do so, leaving Rothen frustrated. “It makes me angry. This player sums it all up. They’re using this club as a springboard for certain players. He’s a quality player who could have made a real contribution to Troyes,” he told RMCSport.

Savio has impressed for Girona, notching 7 goals and 7 assists in over 27 appearances across all competitions. While it took no time for the Cityzens to lure Savio, bringing him to Manchester won’t be an easy task.

Manchester City is heading for a tough time to get the Savio deal over the line
Reports suggest that Manchester City’s impending acquisition of Savio will be closely examined by the English Premier League. This is because both Girona and Troyes are under the same umbrella of the City Football Group. Hence, the Premier League is expected to calculate and study his valuation to prevent the sale from violating FFP.

It’s unclear how much Manchester City will pay Troyes for Savio. Notably, both UEFA and the Premier League have rules governing transactions between clubs under the same ownership. Had these clubs been rivals, UEFA was likely to intervene and prohibit any transactions. Let’s see if the defending EPL winners can get their hands on Savio.
