Just two days remain until Wrexham AFC finally gets to kick off their new domestic campaign. The stakes are high and all eyes are on the Welsh club as they finally end their 15-year exile from the Football League. However, before starting the campaign, there’s a major roadblock ahead of them.

Unfortunately, the Red Dragons will be hosting their opening game against MK Dons without their star player, Paul Mullin. However, according to team manager Phil Parkinson, the club is already one step ahead of the problem as they look to find his replacement.

During the U.S. Tour pre-season fixture against Manchester United, Mullin was rushed to the hospital, and later it was revealed he suffered a punctured lung. The injury has sidelined the Welsh striker for up to two months, forcing Ryan Reynolds to find a replacement. Likewise, Parkinson revealed that the operation isn’t as easy as it sounds.

“That’s proving difficult because teams don’t want to sell their best players, it’s as simple as that,” he told BBC Sport. “The market has become inflated but everyone’s finding that. We’ve got bids on the table for one or two players and we’re trying everything we can to get a player in as soon as possible. But when you’re going for a player who’s a key player at a football club, it’s not easy.”

However, the 55-year-old insists he has “got players more than capable of stepping into Paul’s shoes.” In the process, Parkinson revealed speaking to Mullin, saying he’s “obviously enjoying the Californian sun.” He continued, “He’s in a lot of pain, but the owners are making sure it’s as comfortable a stay as possible.”

Parkinson said Mullin is currently dealing with “pain management,” and when he comes back next week, the medics will assess his injury. The manager also expressed his sadness at not seeing him play the first game, given his contribution last season. “But that’s football – injuries happen unfortunately,” he concluded. However, the question is: will they be able to find his replacement?

Can Wrexham find Mullin’s replacement?

There’s not much time left for Wrexham to find Mullin’s perfect replacement just before their first match. Therefore, it gives them no choice but to start the fourth division without their star player. Subsequently, for the first game, Parkinson will turn towards his fit players. Moreover, the fringe players will also be looking to step up and take the golden opportunity.

While the transfer window is still open for a few more weeks, it gives Reynolds and Co. time to find Mullin’s ideal replacement. It remains to be seen what kind of player they’ll bring. But the biggest task will be to find a replacement without spending a fortune.
