Did Anthony Taylor's penalty decision rob Germany of their rightful place in Euro 2024?

What’s any game without a little banter between fans? However, things got out of control between a group of England and Germany supporters after the hosts were knocked out of the Euros at the hands of Spain earlier tonight. Toni Kroos and Germany had a bitter end to their campaign as their team crashed out of the competition. While the team did their all, Spain’s Mikel Merino crushed their hopes with a winner in the dying minutes of the contest.

Well, the outcome might have been different if match referee Anthony Taylor had given the penalty for Marc Cucurella’s handball, but it never happened and Germany’s night ended in tears. While the German fans were unhappy with their team’s defeat, some English supporters did their best to taunt the hosts for being the first to be knocked out of the competition. Well, this didn’t sit well with the supporters, as the two sets of fans clashed in the streets of Frankfurt.

The local authorities had to get involved to separate the two fan groups. No arrests have been made with both groups warned to keep themselves in check. According to reports, German fans were annoyed after some English fans tried to poke fun and Toni Kroos’s early retirement. The German icon was hoping to end his career on a high lifting the European silverware but failed to do so after referee Anthony Taylor’s controversial officiating allegedly cost Germany the game.

Did Anthony Taylor cost Toni Kroos a fairytale retirement?

Emotions were high following Germany vs Spain as many fans blasted match official Anthony Taylor for failing to award the hosts with a handball after Marc Cucurella’s handball inside the box. Even some former players were left astonished by the official’s decision as ex-USMNT star Herculez Gomez claimed he couldn’t believe what had transpired and it was as if he was taking crazy pills. However, in Taylor’s defense, the handball was 50/50, with Cucurella’s hands close to his body at the time of contact.

If Germany had been awarded the penalty, the team might have had the chance to take the lead over Spain, heading into the dying minutes of the game. However, with the call going against them, the game stood level, which allowed Spain’s Mikel Merino to gracefully connect a lovely lofted pass from Dani Olmo past Manuel Neuer into the back of the net.
