Soccer fans always indulge themselves in their favorite debate, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. Many former and current soccer players have had their say in the longstanding rivalry. Even celebrities have shared their opinions, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney picking one player they will sign to play for their club.

Reynolds and McElhenney came together through direct messages over social media. They decided to buy a soccer club and invested $2.5 million to take over the world’s third-oldest soccer club Wrexham AFC. They brought the Welsh club in February 2021. The duo wanted their club to gain popularity and played a masterstroke of the Welcome To Wrexham series around their purchase and the first season of the Wrexham AFC.

Wrexham AFC owners agreed on Lionel Messi

To promote the Welcome To Wrexham series, Reynolds and McElhenney spoke to Sports Illustrated ahead of its release. They talked about various aspects, like how they decided upon the Welsh club. The host asked the duo to choose one of Ronaldo or Messi they would sign for the club, and both agreed on one name.

McElhenney said, “Messi.” On asking why, he replied, “I like his size.” Reynolds joined the conversation, saying, “I was going to say the same.” However, the duo praised both athletes for what they have done in their respective careers. Reynolds added“Do not slip on Ronaldo. They’re both unbelievable athletes. But I would I think I’d also take Messi. Gareth Bale wasn’t an option?”

The Welcome To Wrexham proved to be a remarkable initiative for the club. It helped the club gain popularity and was a masterstroke by the Hollywood duo. The show was a hit, and Wrexham owners announced the second season to be released this year.
