Fans of Pop icon, Shakira have always been curious and quick to speculate about the hidden meanings behind her songs and music videos. In recent times, speculation has arisen among fans regarding the potential connection between a rat featured in her latest music video and her former partner, Gerard Pique.
Since their highly-publicized breakup, Shakira has remained embroiled in a constant stream of public drama. However, she has managed to channel her experiences into her work. She has done so by releasing a string of successful hit songs within a remarkably short period of time. From diss tracks aimed at Pique to a heartfelt song dedicated to her children, Shakira continues to captivate the hearts of her devoted fanbase.
Her recent collaboration with Manuel Turizo on the song ‘Copa Vacia’ is no exception. Shakira explains the true meaning behind her song
One particular aspect of the video that caught the attention of fans is the appearance of a rat. At the start of the video, a rat can be seen for almost a second. Fans couldn’t help but wonder if this rat had any relation to her ex-boyfriend, Gerard Pique. However, the singer has recently given a response in a subtle way.
She recently went live on Instagram to chat with her fans and also explained the meaning behind the music video. She shed some light on the symbolism behind her mermaid look in the ‘Copa Vacia’ video. The singer explained, “The figure of the mermaid in this video is very symbolic and represents very well this moment of my life because many know that I am on my way back to myself”.

The mermaid, she describes, “gets to sacrifice many things for love. And ends up in a garbage dump surrounded by rats, and finally returns to its habitat”. Talking specifically about the rat relation she added, “Any resemblance to reality is pure coincidence, of course”.
While Shakira hasn’t confirmed the relationship, it also can’t be fully dismissed. The singer hasn’t fully explained who the rats are that she is talking about. They can very well be her former partner and his family from whom she feels betrayed. Regardless of whether the rat represents Gerard Pique or not, ‘Copa Vacia’ is yet another powerful song from Shakira that showcases her talent and ability to capture the hearts of her fans.
