NWSL could be one of the biggest revolutions in soccer in the USA. The premier women’s league has captured the hearts of the fans and gained many supporters since its inception. However, the advancements from the 2024 season are expected to scale it to extraordinary heights. The league will now have VAR and better viewing angles apart from the innovative kits worn by the players. With such growth, no one could be prouder and more excited than the teams’ celebrity owners, including NFL star Patrick Mahomes. But who are all the celebrities involved?

Meanwhile, with a $240 million broadcasting deal, the league will have a wider global reach. Also, the NWSL will see two additional teams this season making it fourteen overall, with many of them having dashing superstars as their owners. So who are they?

Angel City FC

Angel City FC was founded in 2020 and made its debut season in 2022. Relatively new and estimated to be one of the most evaluated teams in NWSL, Angel City is co-owned by Natalie Portman, who is an Academy Award-winning actress, known for movies such as V for Vendetta and Black Swan.

Additionally, Angel City has many other celebrity investors like actress Jennifer Garner, Jessica Chastain, and tennis legend Serena Williams. Other star investors include Billie Jean King, Matthew and Kelly Stafford, P. K. Subban, Candace Parker, singer Christina Aguilera, Gabrielle Union & Kaavia Wade, America Ferrera, and Becky G.

Bay FC

Another team from California, the club, made its debut this season. Based at San Fransico, Bay FC is co-founded by four former USWNT team stars Aly Wagner, Danielle Slaton, Brandi Chastain, and Leslie Osborne. The club also has former NBA legend, Andre Iguodala and entrepreneur and philanthropist Sheryl Sandberg as investors.

Kansas City Current

After its exit in 2017, transferring assets to Utah Royals, Kansas City Current was back in 2020. During this time it was NFL star and 2024 Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, who brought some stake in the team. Later Mahomes also invested in the club.

North Carolina Courage

The two-time Champions and the three-time Shield winners were just founded in 2017. After tremendous success, the club grabbed the eyeballs of four-time tennis Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka. North Carolina Courage, though owned by an entrepreneur, Steve Malik, also joined with the Japanese tennis ace as a partial owner.

NJ/NY Gotham FC

The 2023 NWSL Champions, Gotham FC, has some big athletes as its investors. Basketball legends Kevin Durant and Sue Bird have stakes since 2021 and 2022, respectively. Before the two, USWNT team legend Carli Lloyd also joined to buy a chunk of the team. Gotham also has former NFL star Eli Manning as one stakeholder.

Houston Dash

Owned by entrepreneur Ted Segal, the Dash has two sporting icons, James Harden and Oscar De La Hoya, as partial owners. Harden is an NBA star who plays for the LA Clippers and Hoya is a former professional boxer.

Washington Spirit

Winning the title in 2021, Washington Spirit has the famous Trinity Rodman as its striker. The club is also partially owned by American Journalist Jenna Bush Hager, former president Bill Clinton’s daughter Chelsea Clinton, and former USWNT goalkeeper Brianna Scurry. The club even has former gymnast and Olympic gold medalist Dominique Dawes as one stakeholder.

Utah Royals

After being taken over by the owners of MLS club Real Salt Lake, Utah Royals are making a comeback after their last appearance in 2020. American legendary ski racer Lindsey Vonn became a part-owner of the team earlier this month.

NWSL is surely making waves in the world of sport. From top celebrities to business personnel, the superstars see a huge prospect in women’s soccer. With plans for additional expansion to 16 teams in 2026, talented soccer stars can smell a secure future in the sport.
