It is never easy to own a football club. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney‘s joint venture to help Welsh side Wrexham reach the EFL has been the top example. However, their time with the club is creeping up with financial worries, as sustaining a soccer team outside the EFL proves challenging. The latest episode of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ saw Reynolds outline the club’s worst-case scenario, forcing him to go for sponsors.

Wrexham faced considerable financial difficulties throughout their tenure in the National League. The side desperately needed the promotion last season, and the players lived up to the expectations, helping the side reach League Two on the back of a historic season. The side has done an exemplary job in League Two, holding the 3rd place on the points table.

The latest episode of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ saw club owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney discuss the club’s financial situation with advisor Shaun Harvey. The trio discussed the launch of the team’s third kit, which would put the team at a further loss if they failed to get promoted last season.

“We’re already $4.3 million in the red, spending on the players and pitch and staff improvements. We publicly committed to building a $24 million Kop Stand, we will make $2 million on home tickets,” clarified Reynolds.

Despite the situation, Ryan did not miss out on the chance to poke some fun as he added mentioning Mastercard wouldn’t make a difference since they don’t get paid for it. He stated, “Now, a positive difference is priceless, but you really can’t put that on a balance sheet, especially since Mastercard wouldn’t pay us for mentioning them. We expect to lose an additional $2.2 million next year, which leaves us with a $28 million worst-case scenario.”

However, to the owner’s delight, the side received a promotion last season. Wrexham is currently in League Two, the quote-unquote fourth division of English football. The team believes in bagging consecutive promotions, propelling them to League One.

Wrexham continues to deliver on the promotion promise

The Red Dragons lived up to the expectations last season as they moved to League Two. Following a slow start, Wrexham have found their groove in the league. Significantly, the team currently holds the third place on the points table, leveled with second place Notts County on points.

The side has won eight of their sixteen fixtures while drawing six games this season. The side has lost just two matches in League Two, becoming the second-best only behind Mansfield Town. However, they have been unbeaten this season raising eyebrows in England.

Midfielder Elliot Lee has been the star of the show for Wrexham, finding the back of the net ten times. The team will hope that the other players also step up to the plate in the coming games as the team’s eyes finish in the top three spots to bag automatic promotion.
