Fought ‘Legal Battles’ Before Equal Pay Win, Alex Morgan Free of ‘Distractions’ as USWNT Eyes World Cup Three-Peat

For the USWNT, their influence on and off the pitch is staggering. They are role models to young kids in the country as well as motivation for their women’s empowerment movement. They continue to set a higher standard for the women’s soccer teams in recent years.  The face of the team is none other than Alex Morgan. She is one of the best players on the squad, along with Megan Rapinoe. The two have changed the face of the game by getting involved in the women’s equal pay movement. 

Fighting various “legal battles” to get equal pay similar to the USMNT team, they finally achieved their dreams last February. Morgan addressed in a press conference about their timeless journey together. They now aim to complete the three-peat.

According to Athletic, Morgan stated, “We were fighting a legal battle off the field. We were trying to also win over the world on the field, win over the world’s hearts and minds and proving ourselves. This time around, we don’t have to worry about anything off the field.” After years of battle, they finally found a middle ground with US Soccer in February. It included back pay for the previous World Cup prize money. They mandated equal pay for both men’s and women’s teams.

With all that in the past, Morgan remains concentrated on winning the three-peat. She continued, “All we have to worry about is putting the work in doing everything we need to do from sunup to sundown to get our bodies and our minds right for the next game in front of us. That feels really good and now it’s we have to do the work each game that we set foot on the field.” The squad is ready to complete history on the pitch.

After dominating the game for the past decade, the USWNT succumbed to a bronze place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But with no issues in front of them, Morgan and Co look ready. 

Can the USWNT complete a historic three-peat?

In their first game against Vietnam, the team won with a scoreline of 3-0. Sophia Smith scored two goals, and Lindsey Horan added another. Although their performance levels could improve, the team did a fantastic job and claimed victory. 

Their next game is against the Netherlands on July 27th, as the team won their opening match against Portugal. It will be a tight affair because both teams compete at a high level. Do you think Alex Morgan and the USWNT can win a historic three-peat?
