Dropping Ronaldo: A bold move or a disastrous decision for Al-Nassr's future?

Cristiano Ronaldo currently rules the Saudi soccer scene as the face of the sport in the country. However, the team left him for one of Pro League’s most significant matches. This unexpected outcome has shocked many in the sport. Al-Nassr is scheduled to play against Al-Wehda in the Saudi Pro League 2024–25 after defeating Al-Ettifaq 3-0.

Despite Ronaldo’s absence, Al-Nassr secured a 2-1 victory over Al-Hazem in the recent King’s Cup match. In the last league game, Salem Al-Najdi, Anderson Talisca, and Cristiano Ronaldo each scored a goal to contribute to Al-Nassr’s success. But, due to a less-than-ideal start in the season, Al-Nassr is currently ranked fifth in the Saudi Pro League points standing. But the fixture list looks daunting for the Knights of Najd.

Al-Nassr Club has expressed its intention to protest regarding the dates of their next league matches. Al-Nassr would have played 4 games within 13 days with no time for the players to recover from the games. Nonetheless, the club’s objection shows that they are worried about the potential clash of these matches within a short timeframe.

Team manager Stefano Pioli benched Ronaldo during the King’s Cup in order to give him time to recuperate and reach peak form. Changes were made for the next big Saudi Pro League games and the forthcoming AFC Champions match. The team manager encouraged Ronaldo to rest because of the game against Al Hazem. Moreover, Pioli needed Ronaldo to be at the top of his game for the crucial upcoming matches. A lower-division side match wasn’t as important as the other games on the line.

Given that Ronaldo is getting closer to reaching his 40s and has experienced several serious injuries in recent months, he must stay healthy to play significant games. Age is only a number as he enchants the crowd every time he steps onto the pitch. Guess how many goals Ronaldo has scored for Al Nassr?
