The time has arrived to wipe off discrimination in soccer. With the help of social media, more cases of racial offenses are being reported in the sport. After Real Madrid player Vinicius Junior talked about the concern in Spain, Great Britain is now making efforts to avoid it from the beginning. This comes before the EFL League Two clash between Forest Green Rovers and Wrexham on Saturday. The proactive measure comes into the picture after Wrexham star, Jordan Davies brought to light the racism Welsh players face during games.
Despite severe scrutiny, warnings, and havoc in social media, the problem still seems to persist. And before Rovers travel to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s den, the club has issued a warning to its supporters to avoid any anti-Welsh remarks. Posting on X (previously Twitter) the page wrote, “❌ We remind supporters that anti-Welsh language will not be tolerated ahead of our trip to Wrexham. Police will take action if such chants are reported. #WeAreFGR💚,” promising strict action if found making such offense.

It’s a shame that soccer is having to suffer such a crisis amid rising popularity instead of cherishing the beautiful game. Meanwhile, Wrexham and the Rovers lock horns in a crucial clash. The Red Dragons suffering an injury blow need a couple of wins to be promoted to EFL League One without the playoffs.
On the other hand, Rovers which is battling relegation needs to win every game to stay in League Two. However, despite the battle, both the Rovers and Wrexham are on a commendable mission to fight the issue of racism.

The precautions for the game arrived after Jordan Davies’ reported complaint that Welsh players faced regular racism in the sport. Also using X as a platform, Davies wrote, “If I reported getting called a sheep s*****r every time it happened, we’d be playing in front of no fans for 3 years.” This was a response citing that even Welsh players were suffering from the issue. Earlier, one of Wrexham’s fans was penalized for his comments “dirty English b******s and “dirty Scouse b******s,” on rival fans. It isn’t just Wrexham, even Rovers had a few incidents regarding the offense.
Earlier, the FGR players took a 24-year-old fan from Liverpool to task after he shouted racist slurs against its player Jordan Garrick on 18 April last year. The accused was then punished earlier this February. Even their previous manager Troy Deeney had reported online racism by fans after he made some strict comments about players. With the clubs and authorities taking strict measures, the onus is also on the fans to tackle the issue with diligence.
