English Premier League is hailed for its stiff competition, but Manchester City has taken the competition standard out of it this decade. However, many other clubs haven’t been as fortunate as them, not just to win titles but also to spend heavily. Yet, Pep Guardiola’s club has recently taken on the Premier League, rejecting their restrictions on Associated Party Transactions (APT) that can interfere with the team’s budget. But in a surprising disclosure, Everton has backed them despite City’s FFP hearing getting delayed.
With a tense battle between Manchester City and the Premier League, the clubs stand divided according to reports. The recent revelations have stated that Everton, with Chelsea and Newcastle United, are with the current English Champions and do not want the new APT rules to take effect.

The APT regulations allow the clubs to rake in cash from the sponsors associated with the team’s ownership directly or indirectly. This can create an opportunity for the clubs to trick the FFP rules by inflating the sponsorship prices and adding excess budget on spending in the market.
While most Premier League clubs approved updates to APT regulations, Manchester City, citing their strong financial position, challenged the changes in court back in February. A hearing to decide the matter is scheduled between June 10th and 21st. But Everton’s recent involvement is a surprise for many.

Reasons for other clubs backing Manchester City
This news amazes some Everton fans, considering Manchester City faces similar accusations but hasn’t received punishment yet. Everton had a bitter experience this season after they were deducted 6 points from the Premier League for breaching Financial Fair Play rules in the previous spells. But despite facing a staggering 115 financial fair play allegations from UEFA and the Premier League between 2009 and 2023, City has not yet had a hearing on these issues.
However, the Merseyside club recognizes the value of increased financial contributions from its commercial sponsors and considers the league as the problem rather than Manchester City.

On the other hand, clubs like Chelsea and Newcastle are also for the cause. Having the highest net spend in recent times, the Blues are also known for their hyperactivity in the transfer market and prefer to keep the money coming in. Whereas, Newcastle United was the sole reason for the directions to come into existence. The Premier League made this decision in 2021, following the acquisition of Newcastle by Saudi’s PIF.
However, the Magpies will probably stay neutral regarding the riddle, to avoid drawing unwanted attention. While a few clubs support the idea, Sheikh Mansour’s project faces an uphill battle. Only time will tell if the verdict will side the Sky Blues.
