This year, the NWSL announced its plans to further expand with three new teams in San Francisco, Boston, and Utah. And it looks as though the Boston team is already preparing the stage for their future arrival.
Boston preparing a stadium for their future Women’s team
The City of Boston has recently issued a request for proposals to lease and fund the renovations of half of White Stadium. This stadium is a large open space situated in Franklin Park that seats an impressive 10,000 people.
White Stadium is no stranger to sports. It has accommodated many of the track and field events within the Boston Public High School athletic leagues. According to Boston’s proposed plans, half of the stadium will be renovated by city funds and the other half by a private entity. Apart from the game field, the city will also provide physical therapy facilities, office space for the Athletics Department, locker rooms, and communal spaces.

Jennifer Epstein, the owner of Boston Unity, commented about this. She expressed her enthusiasm about the prospect of White Stadium serving “as the home for the new soccer team”. This certainly is huge for the city of Boston and also for the NWSL. The league is already experiencing a season that has already set several records. This news of stadium renovation is sure to add to it.
NWSL breaking records this season
The NWSL is experiencing unprecedented growth in its fan base this season. Opening weekend saw an average attendance of 15,002 fans, more than any previous season’s record of 10,150. This impressive number was likely contributed by Alex Morgan‘s, San Diego Wave FC who welcomed 30,854 fans to their first home game and set a league record for the largest attendance at a home opener.

The same could be said for Megan Rapinoe‘s OL Reigns, whose new club record of 9,219 people at a home opener further contributed to the NWSL’s success. It seems clear that the audience for NWSL is on the rise. Its progress will continue to be of great interest moving forward.
