Argentina has faced one of the biggest upsets yet in the World Cup by getting defeated by Saudi Arabia. The soccer world was shocked, and the result was jaw-dropping and heartbreaking for Argentina and Lionel Messi fans. The match had many noteworthy moments. Lionel Messi scored a penalty for Argentina and they led 1-0 until Saudi equalized with a banger. And the ultimate result came in favor of Saudi Arabia, 2-1. It was definitely more entertaining than fans imagined.

Many wrote Saudi Arabia off even before starting this match, and Argentina scored the first goal, but destiny and Saudi Arabia had something else in mind. It was a historic moment for them to break Argentina’s 36 games unbeaten record.

Saudi Arabia upset Lionel Messi and Argentina

Argentina scored four goals but lost the match 2-1. Three of those four goals were denied because of the offside rule. Argentia hit three back-to-back offside goals in a matter of 35 minutes.

Lionel Messi scored the first goal of the match in the 10th minute on a penalty that Saleh Alshehri leveled it in the 48th minute, and Salem gained the lead in the 53rd minute of the game.

The game was so intense that there was a stoppage-time required on the field, as, while trying to save the ball, the goalkeeper of Saudi Arabia gave a flying knee to one of the players. Keeper Mohammed Alowais caught teammate Yasser Al-Shahrani with a knee to the chin while trying to save the ball. 

Many fans wanted this WC to be the glory for Argentina, as this might be the last one for Lionel Messi. We can say that Saudi Arabia’s performance surely stunned their beliefs. It only happened once in WC history that a team won the Cup after losing the first match.

As of now, Saudi Arabia is sitting at the top of the table while Argentina is in the last spot. Mexico and Poland are also going to face each other today from the same group. Fans still have high hopes for the South American team. They are going to face Mexico next and they will have to win to keep the dream alive.
