The controversial super league is making progress. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are 2 clubs who have supported the breakaway league. However, their support for having a new independent league from UEFA and FIFA has invited criticism. Yet, the Florentino Perez-backed new league still reportedly has funds to start the project and run it for three years.

Updates from teams have been pouring in lately after a positive verdict for Lopez from the European Court of Justice. Both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have expressed their satisfaction with the issue, unifying the age-old archrivals. However, many other teams have opted out, which raised a few concerns for the rebel league’s officials. But the league still looks very able to kick off with a huge amount.

The league has a potential financial solution for itself, according to reports. Even though the investors remain anonymous, the funds currently available for the establishment are $16.5 billion, according to a report. The funds should manage the tournament for 3 years after its establishment.

However, it is worth noting that the league is expected to be worth $110 billion. Backed by its parent company, A22, the Super League is yet to get the nod from the rest of the clubs. Many top clubs initially encouraged the start of this spin-off league, but things seem to have changed over the years.

The European Champions Manchester City also chose to escape it. Pep Guardiola stood united with UEFA, saying, “We remain fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions and to positive cooperation with UEFA.”

Manchester City’s local rivals, Manchester United, recently issued a statement as well, saying, “Our position has not changed. We remain fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions, and to positive cooperation with UEFA, the Premier League, and fellow clubs through the ECA on the continued development of the European game.”

German giants, Bayern Munich, rejected the league, with the CEO sternly mentioning in his statement, “it’s very clear: the door for the Super League at FC Bayern remains closed.”

Other clubs that have rejected them are Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, PSG, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspurs, etc.

Nevertheless, the Italian Champions Napoli’s President, Aurelio De Laurentiis, was in favor of the verdict by the European Tribunal.

UEFA responds to the verdict by European Court

The ECJ ruled that FIFA and UEFA’s restrictions on new competitions like the Super League were illegal under EU competition law. The tribunal defended the Super League’s right to act independently from the two soccer bodies. On the other hand, UEFA has stated that it is committed to the development of the sport in Europe and working with the associated teams to maintain the standards.
