For a long time, the UEFA Champions League was the Achilles heel for Manchester City. Even after dominating English soccer with 5 league titles since 2017, their European tally remained 0 titles. Hence, it seemed that Pep Guardiola & Co. were just not destined for continental glory after multiple knockout exits. However, the floodgates finally opened for the Sky Blues during their historic treble win in 2023. And yesterday was no different.

The victory against FC Copenhagen sealed their qualification into the QFs. But, it was also a historic night for the club as Manchester City has rewritten 5 long-standing UCL records. Let’s dive straight into the matter.

1. Manchester City with the fastest UCL brace in history!

Against FC Copenhagen, Manuel Akanji opened the scoring in the 5th minute. The lead was doubled by Argentina’s  Julian Alvarez in the 9th minute. This meant Manchester City scored 2 goals within 9 minutes, which is a UCL record for the least time taken to score 2 goals. However, this is not a feat they can claim solely. Back in 2017, Juventus had also gone 2-0 ahead against Tottenham in 9 minutes.

2. Unbeaten home streak

The victory at the Etihad means Manchester City are yet to taste defeat in their last 30 home encounters, becoming only the second club with this record. Impressively, they have emerged victorious in 28 of these matches. Their last home defeat came way back in the 2018-19 season against Olympique Lyonnais. Only FC Barcelona has a better home streak going unbeaten from September 2013 to November 2020. Can Pep Guardiola & Co. better that streak?

3. A first-in-England record for the Cityzens

Following yesterday’s victory, Manchester City became the first side from England to win 10 consecutive UCL games. But across Europe, this is the 4th such time. Real Madrid had a 10-match winning streak that ended in February 2015 and so did Bayern Munich until November 2013. The German Champions also had a 15-match streak that ended in November 2020, which remains the longest consecutive winning streak to date.

The Sky Blues scored 3 goals against Copenhagen. Moreover, they also scored at least 3 or more goals in their previous 8 home games, hence, 9 home matches with a minimum of 3 goals. This is a record not just in the UCL but across all European competitions, including the Europa League & the Conference League.

5. Equal footing with Manchester United

Manchester City has qualified for the UCL QFs for the 7th consecutive time. The last time they failed to do so was against a Monaco side that had the likes of Bernardo Silva & Kylian Mbappe in 2017. This is a record they share with neighbors Manchester United. Only Barcelona and Real Madrid have more consecutive quarter-final appearances (13 & 8 respectively).
