Can Memphis Depay bounce back stronger after this injury, or is this a sign of decline?

The Dutch went from ecstasy to exasperation in a snap during their coveted semi-final game against England. Courtesy of a controversial VAR call, English skipper Harry Kane equalized Xavi Simmons’ screamer off a spot kick. In the end, England advanced to the final to face Spain. As if this was not enough, the Netherlands star striker Memphis Depay went down in the 35th minute, forcing coach Ronaldo Koeman to immediately substitute him and send midfielder Joey Veerman to the field.

What has happened to the Dutch #10? We have you covered. Per the French publication, Foot Mercato, Memphis Depay, was called back because of a probable muscle injury to his thigh. The Dutchman has notably been prone to injuries lately.

The Atletico Madrid striker missed a staggering 28 games for club and country solely in the 2023-24 season because of a muscle injury. He also notably picked a knock on his hamstring in April and sat out Atletico Madrid’s important UEFA Champions League knockouts against Borussia Dortmund.

He stopped dead during play after experiencing severe pain. After introducing a midfielder like Veerman to replace Depay, the Dutch squad went through drastic shuffling and ultimately crashed out of the UEFA Euro.

Though the Dutch rapidly found momentum with Xavi Simons’ early strike, their attack plummeted as the game progressed. Koeman’s men only made a poor two attempts on goal against England’s five. Clearly, a downfall induced by Memphis Depay’s absence and the drastic reshuffle that followed.
