The USWNT’s hopes of a historic three-peat have turned to ash. A lukewarm tournament and a disappointing exit to Sweden in the round of 16 have left many American fans a bit troubled by the entire ordeal. Megan Rapinoe, who missed a penalty, and Coach Vlatko, criticized for his lack of substitutions, are the two names being singled out by both fans and analysts alike. The team failed to pick up pace as Sweden knocked them out 5-4 in penalties.
While the USWNT came through with an average group win through to the knockout stages, Sweden, on the other hand, endured quite an impressive Group stage by finishing with nine points.

The two sides pushed each other’s buttons for the full 90, but neither could conjure a goal. The USWNT held the majority of the ball and ended both halves with high possession. With tired legs on the pitch and a stalemate in extra time, the match ended with Sweden kicking out the US team 5-4 on penalties, in what was a topsy-turvy shootout. The loss has shocked many fans, who have taken to Twitter.

They should’ve practiced and focused more on soccer than complaining

Gonna be a rough morning for your social media team, sorry interns…

This fan has slammed Megan Rapinoe for speaking more off the pitch than on the pitch.
The better team won…this team needs to get rid of the trash @mPinoe so much mouth and no action…

Certainly, this fan knows whose is responsible for such a blunder.
Only ourselves to blame. Close to 20 chances in the 120 minutes and couldn’t score. Then 2 pens miss the target, and one of the post. Didn’t deserve to go through

Congrats on the worst World Cup showing ever!
You guys are awesome.

This fan seems the most affected with the USWNT loosing.
That's it. That seals the deal. I'm no longer a USA fan. I've been a USA women sympathizer since 1997 and have been buying every jersey since 1999. I won't renew my USA member card. I become a fan of Burundi where they actually know how to run a national team.

Well deserved elimination. Your teams arrogance finally caught up with them.

Indeed, it is quite an emphatic win for Sweden and a major blow for the USWNT. The win has allowed the Swedes to book their place in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, the USWNT will be packing their bags.
No three-peat for the 4X World Champions!
It wasn’t the result the USWNT was looking for. The ladies kept their weak foot in the tournament as they endured a poor group stage. Now the disappointing show has continued as they are now out of the competition. This is a massive blow for Vlatko’s side, who were quite ambitious to win the three-peat.

Certainly, their dream has shattered, leaving all the American fans heartbroken. Even after so much backing and having high hopes from the soccer fraternity, they couldn’t manage to qualify for the next round. Perhaps it’s time for everyone on the team to reflect on what went wrong. But for now, they must console each other after such a devastating setback.
