The 2014 FIFA World Cup winner and former Real Madrid superstar Mesut Ozil is in line to quit soccer after a disastrous spell in the Turkish League this season. He signed for Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir this season but saw his game time reduced drastically.

Regarded as one of the best playmakers, Ozil reached his full potential at Real Madrid and Arsenal. However, the career of the playmaker stalled in 2020, as he rarely played for Arsenal. He moved to the Turkish League in 2021. Now, reports say Ozil might have played his last game on Thursday as he saw his side beaten 1-0 and his contract terminated.
Mesut Ozil to quit soccer after contract termination
Ozil joined the Turkish club Fenerbahce for the 2021-22 season. He then moved to Istanbul Basaksehir on a one-year deal with an option for one more year. However, things didn’t go well, and the player made only seven appearances for the club this season.
He played the first 45 minutes in the game against Kayserispor on Thursday. As per Turkish journalist Yakub Cinar, the player hasn’t turned up for training with the club and has told his teammates he is quitting soccer after terminating the contract with the club.

Ozil also terminated his last contract with Fenerbahce before moving to Basaksehir after altercations with the club’s manager, and they claimed he was physically incompetent to play. His move to Fenerbahce came after Arsenal’s new manager, Mikel Arteta, relegated him to the bench.
Ozil won the FIFA World Cup in 2014 with Germany and has one league title with Spanish giants Real Madrid. The three times FA Cup Champions with Arsenal has been named the German Player of the Year five times in his career. It will be interesting to see now what Ozil decides after terminating the contract with the Basaksehir.
