Jesse Marsch feels more Canadian—Is this a betrayal to US soccer fans?

Every game for the USMNT will be important from now on. They currently await the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, with time running out for the 2026 World Cup. However, today’s game against Canada is expected to be a curious one as the team has many things to prove. Firstly, they would like to make a statement to Canada, who proved a better team at the Copa America, reaching the semifinals. But more importantly, it is because of its coach, Jesse Marsch, who rejected to take up their role recently after being scrutinized in 2023. However, the Canadian coach’s recent comment regarding the national anthem could stir the passion even more as they get ready for this epic encounter.

Speaking to the Men in Blazers podcast a few days ago, Marsch admitted that he will be inclined toward Canada when the national anthems go on. “I’ll be ready to sing the Canadian national anthem, and I’ll be excited about it. Of course, I’m American, but right now, I feel more Canadian, and the way people treat me here the way they welcome me here the way they’ve really brought me in to be one of their own,” stated the manager, who is devoted to his role and is impressed by their hospitality.

However, speaking on CBS Sports’ Call It What You Want, Marsch revealed that his love for the USA is still the same despite not singing the anthem. He stated, “I’m probably gonna sing just the Canadian right,” and further said, “I’ll be proud of the American team and the American national anthem. But I work for Canada. This is my job, and I’m proud to be here right,” leaving USMNT a challenge on the pitch.

Meanwhile, things may have been different if the US had opted for Marsch last year. Gregg Berhalter was reintroduced as a coach, but the 50-year-old claimed that he wasn’t fairly treated by US Soccer during the recruitment process. US Soccer was blamed for conducting harsh trials, including necessary aptitude tests, complicating the procedure for hiring. Nevertheless, while he holds Pochettino in good regard, he is confident of acing the Yanks today.

Jesse Marsch is confident of trumping the USA in today’s game

This could be the last spell before the USMNT goes under the management of the Argentine manager. Reports suggested that the coach was to sign his contract today, although the time of announcement remains uncertain. But currently, Jesse Marsch feels that his team is the favorite leading into the game. Speaking in the same show, the former New York Red Bulls coach suggested a 2-1 scoreline when asked about his prediction and said that they would win the game.

However, with history on their side with 17-11-12, the USMNT’s interim coach Mikey Varas reiterated that they will go all in and be attacking. The two friendlies, especially against Canada, will test the team’s current mettle. A win for both teams would be a morale booster as they build up to host the big event in 2023. Who do you think will win the match? Let us know in the comments.
