On Sunday, OL Reign will lock horns against Gotham FC for the NWSL Championship final. Both came from a narrow win in the semi-finals, as Megan Rapinoe and Co. outshined Shield winners San Diego Waves while Ali Krieger’s side defeated Portland Thrones. Ahead of the match, Rapinoe shared her thoughts on her final game.
While speaking to ESPN, she said, “I’m excited. It’s everybody’s last game this year, so I feel like a little bit of the focus is off me. Just excited to be in the championship and try to get this elusive chip.” The reporter then asked her about Ali Krieger, who is also playing her last game. “Oh man, I mean this is going to be something we’ll be talking about with, I don’t know if I’m going to have kids, but her kids, at least for a long time and over vacations and many bottles of wine for years to come,” she said.
While taunting it’s “a fun storyline for everyone else,” Rapinoe claimed her exit alongside Krieger is quite special, and both look forward to it. Finally, the reporter asked how she felt ahead of the final, given that she had previously endured two heartbreaks in the semifinals. She insists that it is the most beautiful way to play her final game. “Playing for a Championship, there’s no better way to go out and hopefully, be able to finally bring that piece of Hardware back,” she concluded.
Indeed, these are some heartfelt words from the veteran. Let’s hope she’ll be able to end her domestic journey on a high note. Meanwhile, let’s dive deeper into the remarkable career that has come to its dusk now.

She also clinched the 2015 and 2019 World Cups, earning the Golden Ball and Golden Boot in the latter. Her outstanding display in 2019 led to her receiving the Ballon d’Or Féminin in the same year. Without a doubt, soccer is about to lose the most talented players, and it’s unlikely there would be any other Rapinoe. Nevertheless, fans will be paying a special tribute to the USWNT legend.
