The biggest sporting extravaganza of the year just concluded. A month-long action-filled soccer saga ended with Argentina winning it all in the end. The tournament reached new heights of viewership throughout its run. It seems like everyone on the planet tuned at some point to witness the greatness of the sport. One counter which showed little to no interest in the sport previously is the USA. However, this World Cup was different. The USMNT made it to playoffs, and this tournament was also hyped because fans considered this the last rodeo for many talented players like Ronaldo, Neymar, and Lionel Messi.
Some fans celebrated while some cried. The beautiful game sometimes breaks hearts. It all started with Brazil losing to Croatia and then Morocco sending Portugal packing. We can understand the hype of finals by the fact that Google recorded the highest traffic in 25 years during the match. Even the Instagram post of star Lionel Messi after the win became the most liked picture on social media. The finals broke a few records in the USA too, shocking many fans and sending a few into the spiral.

Soccer world cup final vs MLB World Series
According to Forbes, the finals between Argentina and France scored record-breaking viewership. The previous FIFA World Cup finals averaged 17.8 million viewers. However, the mammoth number of this year’s finals blows away this stat. It feels like even the USA caught the hype of the tournament and witnessed history in the making. Forbes reported that the finals of FIFA this year had an average of 26 million viewers in the USA alone.
Twitter had fun on the report as they compared these numbers with the views by MLB World Series and many were shocked. According to reports, MLB recorded about 11.8 million viewership in the USA. Yes! The FIFA World Cup final match had twice the viewership as MLB World Series. Here are some responses from fans,

Maybe the most interesting stat here is how down viewership for the 2018 final was.
Probably as a result of the US not qualifying for the tournament as a whole, but interesting to see how that impacted viewership of the final (which the USA has never participated in anyway) https://t.co/jNIB8rgfXU

It is clear soccer ruled the TVs of American households this year. For how long will it stay like this is another question.
However, keeping in mind that the USA is hosting the next edition of the FIFA World Cup along with Canada and Mexico, we can say that this number is only going to increase. FIFA did amazing this year worldwide and has a viewership that can’t even be imagined.
