Sports fans tend to draw comparisons between players and teams of different sports very often. One prime example of the same is Manchester United. The English soccer giant is always a club that every fan wants to compare with other sports teams. The simple reason is that Manchester United used to once dominate English soccer, and it is now nowhere to be seen. In recent times, the Red Devils are often compared with Lewis Hamilton and his F1 team, Mercedes.

Before the 2022 season, Mercedes had won eight consecutive championships. However, the F1 leaders fell quite short of the title in 2022. The fans cannot help but compare Lewis Hamilton and his team to the recent struggles of the English soccer giants.
How are Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes similar to Manchester United?
Prior to this season, Mercedes had won the Constructors’ Championship eight times in a row. However, Mercedes headed into the 2022 season as the third-best team. Red Bull and Ferrari had made massive technical advancements to their challengers, which ultimately gave them the edge.
Formula 1’s Toto Wolff: ‘You need to push people out of their comfort zone’ https://t.co/AtoPbrVvcC

Team Principal Toto Wolff openly compared Manchester United to his team in 2022. He told Financial Times, “I studied why great teams were not able to repeat great title [runs]”. He then name-checks Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. “No sports team in any sport has ever won eight consecutive world championship titles, and there are many reasons for that, and what is at the core is the human. The human gets complacent. You are not energized in the same way you were before. You are maybe not as ambitious”.
In 2021, Wolff suggested the ways he would remove complacency from his team. Including fresh talent in the squad while giving them responsibilities, accepting failures, encouraging senior players to take care of the younger ones, and setting an objective were some of the points that Wolff suggested.
Till 2022, Manchester United was only following Wolff’s first pointer to avoid complacency. The Red Devils seemed to have struggled badly in the other aspects. So, the real question now is, how is Manchester United similar to Lewis Hamilton and his F1 team?
Manchester United – Then and Now
Manchester United was once the best team in England. Along with Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils dominated English soccer for decades. During Ferguson’s reign, Manchester United started almost every season as favorites to win the title. Ferguson had set up title-winning teams on multiple occasions during his tenure at the club.
In recent times, the Red Devils have fallen off a cliff. The downfall started in 2013 after Ferguson retired. The managers that followed had severely mediocre spells at the club. This resulted in the club’s dominance over the soccer league coming to an end. However, Jose Mourinho had a decent spell at the club. During his two-and-a-half-year spell, he managed to win the Europa League, EFL Cup, and the Community shield. He also finished second on the points table in the league, which he considers his ‘best’ achievement in his career.
Jose Mourinho: 🗣️ "If I tell you, for example, that I consider one of the best jobs of my career was to finish second with Manchester United in the Premier League, you will say, 'this guy is crazy.' I keep saying this because people don't know what is going on behind the scenes." pic.twitter.com/Hlq8q9LL7l

The Red Devils appointed Erik Ten Hag as the manager before the 2022 season. Halfway through the season, it’s safe to say that Ten Hag has successfully shown the fans glimpses of the good old days. Currently, United is comfortably slotted in the Top 4, with an outside chance of possibly winning the league.
