The 2023 SheBelieves Cup is finally underway. The USWNT clashed against soccer rivals Canada for their first game of the campaign. Fans and players think the cup competition is good practice for the World Cup. Major players like Megan Rapinoe will gradually return back to action from their injuries during this competition.

However, there seem to be different kind of problems on the other side of the border. The Canadian Soccer board has reportedly not been generous enough with its funding towards their national women’s soccer team.

The fans were shocked when both sets of players, who are actually rivals, came together for a heartwarming gesture.

The USWNT shares a moment of solidarity with Canadian rivals!

Even though the USWNT ripped right through the Canadians, with the final score being 2-0, the fans didn’t really take too much note of that. Prior to the game, the soccer world was stunned after two arch-rivals, America and Canada, came together in protest of the recent gender inequality dispute. It’s safe to say that every single fan went into a frenzy after watching both sets of players lock shoulders with each other. Both the squads shared a moment of solidarity with each other.

The majority of the fans went absolutely berserk after seeing this. Many fans reminded everyone that US and Canada were only rivals on the pitch. They also thanked the USWNT for supporting their team. Quite a few fans even tagged the official Canada soccer Twitter handle.

They then requested the Canadian soccer authorities to pay their women soccer players what they rightfully deserve. Many fans only fear that this uproar in the Canada soccer team camp shouldn’t hamper their World Cup preparations.

Recently, a fan even urged Wrexham AFC‘s co-owner, Ryan Reynolds to speak about the ongoing strike. The Canadian soccer players have also tried their best to protest against their own soccer board, including backing out from the cup competition.

How did the Canadian women’s soccer team protest?

Prior to the SheBelieves cup, Canadian women’s soccer players tried their best to protest against their board. The players decided to wear their jerseys inside-out as a sign of ‘operating under protest’.

Canada striker, Janine Beckie told the media, “I think we’ve made it pretty clear that we’re operating under a protest at the minute so we made a decision as a team that we were going to do this and show our solidarity together and this is one of the ways that we decided to do that”, as per MSN.

All the Canadian soccer players also formed an association and released an official statement. The purpose of that statement was basically to demand change. They simply requested their soccer board to rightfully fund their World Cup preparations and treat them equally like Canada’s male soccer team.

That statement also quoted, “We are left feeling frustrated and, once again, deeply disrespected by Canada Soccer”.
