Is Pochettino's USMNT role just a stepping stone to his true passion—coaching in Argentina?

Admit it—we all raised our eyebrows when we first heard about the possibility of Mauricio Pochettino taking over as the US Men’s National Team manager. After spending almost a decade in the domestic scene managing some of the top clubs, the Argentinian tactician is now greasing his hands on the tactical board for a foreign nation. While Pochettino is likely embracing this change to the best of his ability, we may soon see him back in the dugout, managing a club!

The shocking revelation was made by the former Tottenham manager himself, during an interview with TNT Sports Argentina. When asked if he would like to coach a team in Argentina at some point in his career, the 52-year-old succinctly replied, “Yes, yes.”

Continuing with the question, when asked if there’s a club he preferred, Pochettino replied, “I knew that was coming,” with a laugh and continued, “Well, I think it’s clear that my club is Newell’s Old Boys and why not one day coach Newell’s? It would be very nice.”

Notably, Pochettino is among the esteemed Argentinians who have had the honor of playing for Newell’s Old Boys. Other revered names on this list include Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona, Marcelo Bielsa, Lionel Scaloni, and Gabriel Batistuta. His former disciple La Pulga also mentioned in the past his desire to return to Newell’s Old Boys to play, so Pochettino’s desire to coach there is only natural and understandable.

So is his plan to make a return in domestic soccer. Surprised? Well, you shouldn’t be. Even Jamie Carragher believes Mauricio will return to coaching a club just after completing his two-year gig for the USMNT when the 2026 World Cup ends. “I only see him doing two years and being totally honest and sort of finishing after that World Cup and I’d expect to see him go back into the club game,” said the Liverpool icon earlier in the debut episode of the Overlap US show.

Of course, it’s still early to speculate about Pochettino’s next move, as this is just the start of his journey in international football. However, it seems he already has another national team in mind that he’d love to coach.

In a recent interview, Mauricio Pochettino touched on the influence of Argentinian-born coaches in soccer, which led him to an interesting revelation. “Although I know there are many other great Argentine coaches, the Argentina national team could also be an option at some point, if the opportunity arises.”

For now, though, he’s focused on coaching the Stars and Stripes and believes Lionel Scaloni is doing a great job with La Albiceleste. In fact, Pochettino expressed his desire to pit his USMNT side against Lionel Messi and Co. in a friendly.

“We haven’t talked about it yet [the possibility of a friendly clash], but I would love to, of course, play against Argentina because it would be the chance to compete against the best team in the world today, right?”

If such a showdown between the two nations ever happens, it would surely be something to look forward to, wouldn’t it?
