“Actually, so fitting.” This is how Alex Morgan described her penalty miss in the final game for the San Diego Waves against the North Carolina Courage. While her response was duly noted, what about the woman who denied the USWNT icon her moment? We’re talking about Casey Murphy, who had remained silent about her controversial save—until now. In an exclusive interview with EssentiallySports, the star goalie revealed that she and Morgan ‘didn’t speak’ after the incident.
Should have read the room, Casey! Even though the 28-year-old had to do her job by guarding the sticks, that feeling of adhering to professionalism surely came at the wrong place, wrong time. However, it was just her cat-like reflexes that just clicked in. “For me, it was just reacting to the shot,” said Murphy to EssentiallySports. “And no, we didn’t speak about it after.”
Of course, both must have met each other with awkward silence but that’s just a part of the game. Yet, that won’t deny Murphy from expressing the respect and admiration she has for the former Tottenham player. “But obviously, you know, she is a tremendous soccer player and tremendous advocate for women’s soccer. What she’s done on and off the field is inspiring, and I’m just so thankful for Alex and what she’s done for the game,” added Murphy.

While Murphy was called up for the recent Paris Olympics, Morgan remained an exception. This way, the Courage star never got the chance to win something alongside the 2x World Cup winner. Regardless, the goalie hopes she can catch up with Alex again sometime and perhaps talk about their last encounter. “Also, I’m really excited for her in this next chapter, excited for her and her family, and looking forward to keeping in touch for sure,” concluded Murphy.
Everyone hoped the USWNT icon to curtain her illustrious soccer career in style. That sadly wasn’t the case as her failure to convert from the spot added more misery to the 1-4 loss against the NWSL rival, not to mention a sent-off for Waves as well. However, it must have been the script that fate wanted to stick with.

Even Morgan herself admitted that “It’s already written,” in the recently released episode of A Touch More Podcast with Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird. “Making the penalty would be sweet, but missing it doesn’t take away from this day,” reflected Morgan. So there you go, the 35-year-old doesn’t have bad blood against Murphy. Rest, her coach Landon Donovan also managed to neutralize the situation.

Landon Donovan came in support of Alex Morgan despite missing a penalty in the final game against Casey Murphy
Missing her chance to score her final game saw Alex Morgan face a lot of criticism. However, recently hired manager Landon Donovan came in support of his former disciple. “I missed way more penalties than [Alex Morgan] did in my career. It’s just part of the game,” said the USMNT icon during the post-match presser.

There was no chance whatsoever for Morgan to find a goal in the latter stages of her final game as she was subbed off at the 13-minute mark, just minutes before she missed from the spot. But just as they say, everything happens for a reason. There surely must have been for the same that saw Casey Murphy steal the spotlight from Alex Morgan.
Perhaps the two can share a few laughs on this incident the day they catch up one day.
